A voice agent is not a cute chatbot. It's talking to real customers with real stakes. Build the guardrails before you build the personality.
The build checklist
- Don't let it give medical, legal, or financial advice. Instruct it to hand those questions to a human.
- Don't let it make promises or guarantees. No quoting unapproved prices, no promising outcomes. Take a message or book a callback instead.
- Give it a knowledge base so it stops making things up. If it doesn't know, it says so and passes to a human.
- Disclose that it's an assistant where appropriate. Honest, sets expectations, and sometimes expected.
- Always have an escalation path to a human. Never trap an upset or urgent caller in a loop.
- Escalate real emergencies immediately. Direct them to emergency services or a human right away.
- Get consent and scope in writing with your client. Agree what the agent will and won't do, and that they approve it handling their calls.
- Be aware of call-recording consent. Some places require a notice; some require everyone to agree. Rules differ by location.
Boring guardrails beat a brilliant agent that gets your client in trouble. Set these up first.
One honest note: this is general guidance to help you build responsibly, not legal advice. Rules vary by state and country, so check the local rules for your client's area, and when the stakes are high, have a qualified lawyer look at it.
