The Discovery-Call Framework

The talk-30 listen-70 question sequence that closes without pitching features.

You saw the broke rep and the rich rep on a sales call. The broke one talks for twenty minutes about the tech. The rich one asks a few questions and lets the owner talk. Here is exactly how the rich one runs the call.

The one number that matters: talk 30, listen 70

On a good discovery call, the owner talks about 70% of the time. You talk 30%. If you are talking more than they are, you are not closing, you are lecturing. Ask, listen, and repeat their pain back to them.

The question sequence

Run these in order. Do not jump to price. Do not pitch features.

  1. Open on their world: "Walk me through what happens to a call at your shop at 8pm right now."
  2. Dig into the missed-call pain: "How many calls a week do you think slip through after hours or when you're slammed?" / "What's one job worth to you on average?"
  3. Do the math out loud, with them: "So if you're missing even five calls a week, and a job is worth $300, that's a few grand a month walking away. Sound about right?"
  4. Find what they've tried: "Have you tried anything for this, a service, a receptionist, voicemail? What happened?"
  5. Confirm they want it fixed: "If a call got answered every single time, day or night, what would that be worth to you?"

Diagnose, do not sell

The first half of the call is diagnosis. You are a doctor asking where it hurts, not a salesman reading a brochure. Repeat their pain back in their own words: They say: "Yeah, weekends are brutal, we just miss everything." You say: "So weekends are the worst, that's when you're losing the most jobs. If we plugged that hole first, that alone would pay for this. Right?" Now they are nodding. You did not convince them. You showed them their own pain clearly.

Anchor the money before you name a price

Never wait for them to bring up price. You bring up the money they are already losing first. Once "a few grand a month walking away" is in the room, your setup and retainer feel small next to it.

How to end

The broke rep ends with "I'll send you some info." The rich rep ends with a next step: "Here's the number this fixes. I've got a slot this week. Want to start?"

Whoever listens more, earns more. Ask three good questions, shut up, and let the owner sell themselves.
